The best Higgins Lake gifts either bring the lake home or get someone back out on it: a hoodie or trucker hat with the Higgins Lake outline, a ceramic ornament for the tree, or a day on the water like a pontoon rental or a paddleboard at South Higgins Lake State Park. For the out-of-state regular, a $42 nonresident Recreation Passport covers vehicle entry at both Higgins Lake state parks (as of October 2026).

Local Higgins Lake experience gifts
Local options here are mostly state-park run and rental based, so the best experience gifts are rentals, cabins, and DNR passes. Rentals are seasonal, so most of these are gifts for next summer. Prices and rules below come from each business's or agency's own website, checked in October 2026.
11. A pontoon rental day
Give them a day on the water without owning a boat.
-
B & B Sports Center & Marina (Roscommon): the Deluxe Pontoon (22 feet, up to 10 people, life jackets included) is listed from $500 for a one-day rental (as of October 2026). Renters must be 21 with a valid driver's license. Season dates and the hours a day covers aren't posted, so call before you buy.

Higgins Lake Marine (Roscommon): a day on the 11-person Sweetwater pontoon is $400, and the 13-person tritoon is $500 (as of October 2026). The $400 deposit is fully refundable within 24 to 48 hours after the boat is returned, if no damage is assessed. The site lists no age rules and its posted hours contradict each other, so call to confirm.

Good to know: Michigan requires a boating safety certificate for anyone born on or after July 1, 1996, who operates a vessel (Michigan DNR). The DNR's age rules apply it to motorboats over 6 horsepower.
12. Paddle rentals at South Higgins Lake State Park

The South Higgins Lake State Park Store rents kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, and pedal boats. Posted prices (as of October 2026): paddle boards are $20 an hour or $80 a day, a kayak or canoe is $20 for the first hour and $10 for each additional hour, and a pedal boat is $35 an hour. The DNR lists rentals from mid-May through September, and the Store's own page still shows its 2025 hours, so confirm the 2027 schedule, put the plan in a card, and book for summer.

13. A mini cabin at North Higgins Lake State Park

North Higgins has two mini cabins in the west loop of the modern campground. Each sleeps four, with a mini refrigerator, microwave, and two bunk beds. Bring your own linens and cooking supplies. The park page lists no nightly rate, so check the reservation site before you buy. South Higgins Lake State Park has one accessible mini cabin that sleeps five, so book it early.

14. A visit to the Higgins Lake Nursery and CCC Museum
Not every gift has to cost money. This museum inside North Higgins Lake State Park tells the story of Michigan's first tree nursery and the Civilian Conservation Corps, with a reconstructed CCC barracks building on the museum grounds and graded gravel trails through the interpretive areas. Admission is free, but a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry. It is by appointment only from Sept. 2 to Oct. 31, so call to confirm hours.

15. A Recreation Passport or a DNR gift card
The Recreation Passport covers vehicle entry to all 103 state parks and recreation areas, including both Higgins Lake parks. Michigan-registered vehicles pay $15 a year at plate renewal, so this is a gift for out-of-state lake lovers: $42 for a nonresident annual passport or $12 for a daily one (as of October 2026). Nonresident annual passports expire Dec. 31 of the year they are bought and take 2 to 3 weeks to process, so buy in January.
A DNR gift card covers reservations at state parks and DNR-managed harbors, Recreation Passports, and DNR concession items. The page doesn't say outright that lodging is included, so ask first. It isn't valid at private concession locations or for fishing licenses, so ask the Store in idea 12 before counting on a card for rentals.

16. A Michigan fishing license

Both DNR park pages call Higgins Lake "best known for its perch and lake trout." An annual all-species license is $26 for residents and $76 for nonresidents, each with an additional $1 surcharge per the DNR's 2026 release, and a daily license is $10 (as of October 2026). The DNR says 2026 licenses are valid through March 31, 2027. No Higgins Lake fishing guide with posted prices turned up, so make it a do-it-yourself gift and add a boat: B & B Sports Center & Marina (idea 11) rents 14-foot aluminum fishing boats at $50 for two hours or $100 for 8 hours (as of October 2026), booked by phone only.

17. A festival weekend at the lake

South Higgins Lake State Park hosts a Harvest Fest, typically held in late September or early October. The 2026 listing included hayrides, a costume parade, and live music. Cost wasn't listed, the 2025 edition was a campers only event, and no 2027 date is posted. In winter, the Higgins Lake Roscommon Chamber of Commerce lists WinterFest among its events, held each February. Watch the chamber's WinterFest page for dates.
